Language Requirement

All programs (except the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages program for native speakers of English) require that students work at an advanced level in a second language.

  • Students admitted to the undergraduate program or to the MAIPS, MPA, MAIEP, MAITP or Two-Year MBA program must be prepared to work at a minimum third-year university level in their language of study. Advanced Entry programs usually require a higher level of language proficiency. Those testing below that level will require additional study to complete their degree.
  • To help evaluate language skills (other than English), students may download a Diagnostic Language Test from http://www.miis.edu/languages.html. The test is self-administered and will indicate whether the student has the required level of language proficiency. Because only advanced courses in language are offered during the academic year, students who do not achieve the minimum level should strongly consider beginning their studies by enrolling in the Institute’s Intensive Language Program in order to bring their language up to the appropriate level.
  • The Teaching Foreign Language program and all programs in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation require that students demonstrate a high proficiency (4th year +) in English and in one or more of the languages regularly offered at the Institute, prior to admission.

Checking your admission status

You are responsible for making sure that all support documents needed to complete your application have been received by the Admissions Office. You will be notified if there are items missing from your application file.

Admitted students will be required to send a non-refundable tuition deposit of US $500 to confirm their enrollment plans.

If you are offered admission and decline, your application will be canceled. Support documents will be kept on file for two years should you wish to reapply within that time.

All documents contained in your application file belong to the Monterey Institute and cannot be returned. The status of your file and the information it contains are confidential. Information will be revealed, at our discretion, only to you or to individuals whose names you have provided to us in writing.
