Despite the growing demand for translators and interpreters, top-level training for these positions is available at only a limited number of institutions worldwide. The Monterey Institute is the premier school in North America offering graduate programs in both translation and interpretation. Students come here from all over the world to master this demanding profession, gaining analytical and technical skills, cultural literacy, conduct, and competence, and an understanding of the professional integrity and loyalty that will be asked of them.
Our students work with a full-time faculty of experienced interpreters and translators, who are not only their teachers but they are coaches, mentors and career advisors. They train under the same conditions and using the same technology that they will encounter in the field. The Monterey Institute provides translators- and interpreters-in-training with unique opportunities for multidisciplinary, multilingual learning.
The Monterey Institute offers translation and interpretation courses in the following languages: Chinese, Japanese (日本語), Korean, German, French, Russian, Spanish — all paired with English. Working in one or more of these languages, paired with English, students can earn master’s degrees in translation, translation and interpretation, conference interpretation or the newly emerging field of translation and localization management.
Monterey Institute graduates can be found in high-profile assignments around the globe, from Security Council debates at the United Nations, to Pacific Rim trade negotiations and treaties in multiple languages, to the Summer Olympic Games. Others translate technical specifications and manuals, books and scientific papers, and literary works.
